   SINGLE-EDGE SWORDS / SABERS (Dao)
   
Raven Studios training swords are designed to withstand the rigors of free-sparring and are also well suited for forms and solo technique practice. I feel it is important that each training sword mimic a real swords performance and feel as closely as possible, therefore hardwood swords are constructed with the following qualities:
  • Patterned after real swords. I strive to maintain historical accuracy.
  • The blades are made from Hickory (unless otherwise noted).  Information about hardwood
  • The blades are made with a ricasso for added strength and balance, and the edges are rounded for durability.
  • The hilt is made from your choice of Jatoba, Hickory, or Purple Heart.
  • The guards are locked into the blades and can not slide or loosen.
  • The blades have a full tang and the handles are constructed with laminated hardwood slabs.
  • The handle is oval shaped for maximum comfort and control of the sword.
  • Finished with a linseed and tung oil blend which penetrates into the wood to create a tough and durable surface. After the oil has cured, the wood is hand buffed with a paste wax to provide even more protection from the elements.

 Custom Swords

If you would like one of the standard sword (seen below) with your own special specifications; hilt design, blade thickness, point of balance etc., or you'd like a type of sword not found in this catalog, supply a written description (photos or drawings are very helpful) and I'll let you know if it's something I can do for you.

Creating a custom training sword may take a bit more time, and depending on the amount and difficulty of the modifications, the cost is generally between 10% to 100% over the base prices seen below. Contact ravenstudios@little-raven.com for a quote.

Goose Quill Saber (Yan Mao Dao) - A single-edge straight blade, maintaining the same width throughout, curving up at the tip with a false edge.

Willow Leaf Saber (Liu Ye Dao) - Single-edge blade that curves up gently its entire length, maintaining the same width until the tip where there is a slight taper and a false edge.

Ox Tail Saber (Niu Wei Dao) - Often called a "Kung Fu Broadsword". The blade has a pronounced curve, widening towards the end then tapering to a point at the tip.

Two-Handed Saber - This sword is similar to the Goose Quill Saber, with a longer blade and two-handed grip.
